Automation of painting increases occupational safety
Health protection is another important argument in favor of automating the painting process. When this is done by hand, the workers are exposed to paint and solvent fumes. When a robot is used, this burden is removed from the workers. As part of the automation process, Kässbohrer also switched to chromate-free paint for the manufacture of the PistenBully.

In order to achieve this ambitious investment objective in the area of the paint shop, VinFast commissioned Dürr to handle this project. “Our paint shop will be the biggest in Vietnam, and highly automated through the integration of numerous IIoT applications. This makes it the benchmark for outstanding quality combined with the lowest operating costs, the highest ecological standards, and a high level of occupational safety,” explains James Deluca, CEO of VinFast Trading and Production Company.
Patented layout concept for a lean building
The VinGroup constructed the building for the paint shop based on the patented layout concept developed by Dürr in a record time of just short of eight months. The layout minimizes the investment and operating costs, not least since it only needs two levels and no so-called penthouse. The compact design enabled the concreted area to be reduced by approx. 15,000 m2. This corresponds to a saving of more than 20% compared with a conventional concept.
VinFast’s requirement of maximum automation of production processes and logistics is met with IIoT-capable machines from end to end. They are comprehensively controlled, monitored, and supervised in real time using control technology from Dürr. This makes it possible to test and optimize the overall equipment efficiency (OEE), for example.
Flexible technology for future targets
Just how precisely the paint shop technology meets the requirements of VinFast while remaining flexible for changes in the future is demonstrated by the oven. The EcoInCure oven achieves the best possible quality when it comes to the top coat appearance thanks its heating process from the inside out and optimized air flow. Each body gets a digital quality certificate for the drying process. The data from the IIoT-capable oven is collected and evaluated by the control technology for this. In addition, EcoInCure’s innovative, space-saving transverse mode of operation in combination with a central high-bay warehouse makes it ideal for the compact building concept.
The principle of heating from the inside is particularly beneficial for bodies with different material thicknesses (a perfect example is electric vehicles with their reinforced frame on the underbody). The innovative EcoInCure drying method significantly reduces thermal component stresses compared with conventional ovens. VinFast is therefore well prepared technically for the future expansion of the model range to include electric vehicles.
The new VinFast paint shop will also be equipped with the latest generation of the fully automatic Ecopaint Robot. This includes the extremely mobile painting robots with seven-axis kinematics, which do not need a rail. This saves space and investment costs. Equipped with a whole range of sensors, they are prepared for the requirements of an Industry 4.0 environment. The robots supply real-time data that is analyzed and evaluated using the latest software products from Dürr.

At the “Product Launch”, we demonstrated how technicians can identify all components of a test stand fast and easy with Dürr’s “Augmented Smart Customer Guidance” via tablet. The technicians receive specific information and are able to identify and resolve disturbances via Online-Support.
Furthermore, the participants were provided an insight into the digital marketplace Loxeo and learned how intelligent applications and service concepts can optimize the customers‘ working processes.
Another impressive scenario is the human-robot collaboration (HRC) – for example for the foglamp aiming of the the new Ford Focus. This innovative approach optimizes the ergonomics at the workplace and enables the collaboration between human and machine with the headlamp aiming. For this innovative project, Dürr Assembly Products received the “Ford World Excellence Award”.

High energy efficiency through heat recovery
The humid air produced by water treatment plants is dried during the first stage to prevent condensation in the RTO system. This is done by first routing the air through a droplet separator and then heating it in a heat exchanger. Dürr favors this particular design of heat exchangers in accordance with the individual requirements of a purification plant because the right construction type and chemical composition have a significant influence on the choice of materials and the necessary maintenance intervals, and therefore on the plant availability.
The predried air then reaches the next step, thermal oxidation, via a fan. The com-bustion process that takes place there produces acid that corrodes the material from which the plant is constructed. Corrosion-proof special materials protect the plant against this danger. They consist of a combination of high-grade stainless steels with different coatings. The design of the Ecopure® RTO enables various materials and coatings to be used so that the system can be optimally adapted to different pollutant loads.
To burn all the organic compounds – and therefore also the odorous substances – the contaminated exhaust air must be heated to at least 850°C. The high tempera-ture is achieved with minimal use of primary energy because an integrated ceramic heat exchanger already heats the exhaust air to 820°C. A natural gas burner is only used for the remaining 30°C to achieve the operating temperature. “The process is very energy efficient since the heat is recovered from the hot, purified air to heat the cold, unpurified air,” explains Dertinger.
In the last stage of the exhaust air treatment process, a flue gas scrubber removes all the acidic pollutants that have formed during oxidation. Ultimately, the system achieves a 99.9% destruction efficiency. “The RTO system has fully met all expec-tations. We’re not getting any more complaints about unpleasant odors and are complying with the legal limits. The system has a high level of availability and so far has not had any unscheduled downtimes. On top of this, the operating costs are as low as Dürr told us they would be,” says Müller, positively summing up the first year after the system was put into operation.
